While metals are excellent materials with high strength and outstanding mechanical properties, when they are exposed to a corrosive environment, the surface of the metal will corrode and thus pose a potential danger to the structure and will reduce its service life. The potential economic impact of the corrosion of metallic structures in the US is estimated to be $276 billion/ as estimated by the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE). One of the best approaches to preventing and inhibiting corrosion is to create a barrier over the metal surface, which can be achieved using protective coatings. These coatings will protect against corrosion by preventing moisture and chemicals from attacking the metal. With their excellent adhesion, convenient application, mechanical strength and toughness, thermal, electrical, and chemical resistance profile, epoxies are highly effective as corrosion protection coatings for numerous applications. Sudhir Ananthachar of Evonik’s Crosslinkers will present the fundamentals of epoxy chemistry as it relates to corrosion prevention as well as data to demonstrate how epoxy systems can be optimized for corrosion prevention.

Sudhir Ananthachar is a Senior Principal Applications Chemist at Evonik Corporation. He earned a Master’s Degree in Chemistry from Polytechnic University Brooklyn, N.Y. and has over 20 years of formulation and application development experience with epoxy curing agents, industrial and architectural coatings, radiation curable coatings and inks. Sudhir holds several patents in epoxy curing agents and radiation curable coatings.
