Polyurethanes are versatile materials that are used across a wide swath of industries for a wide variety of applications. From wind energy to medical tubing, polyurethanes play an important part in products used on a large and small scale. In this infographic, we'll cover markets, applications, and the basics of polyurethane coatings, adhesives and sealants.
Looking for polyurethanes for your coatings formulation?
Prospector has listings for polyurethanes from global suppliers, complete with technical data and sample request capabilities.
Highlights from the infographic:
- Polyurethanes can be liquid, stretchable, pliable or rigid and can be spread, sprayed or molded.
- Markets where polyurethanes are used: energy; construction; house and home; health and safety; transportation and appliances.
- The largest percentage of polyurethanes are used in flexible and rigid foam products. Only about 3% are used in coatings and 6% in adhesives and sealants.
- The benefits of polyurethane coatings include improved product appearance and protection from environmental conditions.
- Fluorourethanes and films are two notable types of polyurethane coatings. Fluorourethanes are higher performing than non-flourinated urethanes. They are used in extremely harsh environments, like pipe linings. Films are being used more frequently for aerospace, transportation and solar applications.
- Polyurethane adhesives and sealants exhibit strong bonding capabilities, have "green strength" and reduce the need for clamping and holding of materials.
